Welcome to the May edition of Mountainfreak.net. Looks Like Spring is finally upon us here in the North Georgia Mountains and it's time to get out and enjoy it! I was up around Helen/Hiawassee last week and it was just beautiful with the native azaleas, dogwoods and wildflowers in full bloom. I think we have a pretty interesting issue for you this month. In recognition that it's time for campers to start heading up to the North Georgia Mountains in droves, we have some information about a couple of lesser known camping areas on our Outdoors page..and some info on places to stop on your way are included on the Eat & Shop page this month.
The article that was really interesting and fun to research for this month's issue is on our Reports page.."Georgia's Area 51" is about Dawson Forest and the fact that this great outdoors resource for Georgians once housed a semi-secret nuclear laboratory complete with a 10,000 watt nuclear reactor. I would like to thank Robert Elzey for contributing the photos for the article.
We try very hard to make this site what the readers want it to be..and one complaint I have recieved is that we tended to focus on events that had already happened-touche..that was true. This month we have tried to feature more upcoming events on the Mountainfreak Music page and you will also find some information on the 1st Annual Horsin' Around Barbecue Festival at Brasstown Valley that will take place later this month on the Eat & Shop Page.
